Punta de Teno Tenerife – Lighthouse, Views, and the Edge of the Island

There are places that seem to whisper of raw, untamed beauty. One such treasure is Punta de Teno, the westernmost point of Tenerife, where the powerful Atlantic Ocean collides with the unspoilt volcanic landscapes of the Teno Rural Park. Visiting this headland is not just about reaching a scenic spot – it is a journey into seclusion, to a place where every breath carries the fresh ocean breeze and the horizon seems endless.

Punta de Teno Lighthouse – Guardian of the Atlantic

The central landmark of Punta de Teno is the Faro de Punta de Teno lighthouse, which has guided sailors since 1897. Originally built in the traditional Canary Islands style, it was replaced in 1976 by a modern, automated tower. Its striking red-and-white stripes stand out against the dark volcanic rock and the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean, making it both a symbol of the cape and one of its most photogenic sights.

Wild Beauty and Breathtaking Views

Punta de Teno truly feels like the edge of the world. From here you can admire some of the most dramatic views of the Los Gigantes cliffs in Tenerife, which rise more than 600 metres above the ocean. On clear days, the silhouettes of neighbouring islands La Gomera and La Palma can be seen on the horizon, adding even more magic to the panorama.

There are no typical tourist attractions or noisy cafés here. Instead, you will find a small cove with black volcanic sand, a great spot for a refreshing swim in the ocean. Local fishermen often come to this secluded spot, lending the place an authentic charm.

Travel Tips for Visitors

Punta de Teno is a place of unspoilt nature, so you won’t find shops or cafés nearby. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and anything else you may need for a comfortable stay. It can often be windy at the cape, so a light jacket is recommended.

How to Get to Punta de Teno

The route to Punta de Teno is an adventure in itself. The winding TF-445 road from Buenavista del Norte snakes along dramatic cliffs, revealing panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the lush ravines of the Teno Rural Park. It is one of the most scenic drives in Tenerife, gradually leading you into one of the island’s most remote and atmospheric locations.

However, access by private car is restricted to protect the fragile ecosystem. Private cars are not allowed during the following hours: 10:00–19:00 in the winter season (1 October–20 June) and 08:00–20:00 in summer (21 June–30 September). During these times, the only way to reach Punta de Teno is by public bus 369, which runs regularly from Buenavista del Norte. The journey takes around 20 minutes and costs just €1.

For those who enjoy active travel, the road is open to walkers and cyclists at all times, offering the chance to experience the stunning landscapes in complete solitude. Always check the weather before setting out, as the road may occasionally close due to rockfall risk.

For a more comfortable and time-efficient visit, you can also explore Punta de Teno as part of an organised tour. Several companies include this spectacular cape in full-day excursions that often combine highlights such as Masca, Garachico, Icod de los Vinos, or La Orotava, along with scenic photo stops and hotel transfers. This is an excellent option if you prefer not to drive or plan your own transport. Choose one of the recommended tours below or browse all available options here.
