Tenerife is renowned for its spectacular landscapes, and few places capture its wild beauty as perfectly as Masca Gorge and the tiny mountain village of Masca. Nestled deep within the rugged Teno Mountains, this secluded spot is a true jewel of the island — a place where unspoilt nature meets ancient legends.
Where is the village of Masca?
Masca village lies in the north-west of Tenerife, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, at around 600 metres above sea level. It sits within the dramatic Teno mountain range.
Getting there is part of the adventure. The TF-436 road to Masca is famously narrow and winding, offering breathtaking views of the mountains, deep ravines, and the Atlantic Ocean. Driving here requires confidence behind the wheel, but the reward is unforgettable. Be sure to stop at viewpoints such as Mirador de Cherfe and Mirador de Masca to soak up the sweeping panoramas.
Masca Village: The Heart of the Gorge
The village itself is a charming cluster of cobbled streets and traditional Canarian houses. Until the 1960s, Masca was virtually cut off from the outside world, which helped it remain a refuge from pirates and retain its authentic atmosphere. Today, only about 100 people live here.
Start your visit at the Mirador de Masca viewpoint, which offers the iconic, postcard-perfect panorama that has made this village world-famous: plunging ravines, jagged cliffs rising from the Atlantic, and the miniature village clinging to the mountainside. While the village itself is picturesque, it is the surrounding views that truly take your breath away.
Things to See in Masca Village:
- Plaza de Masca: The central square, home to an ancient laurel tree thought to be several hundred years old.
- Chapel of the Immaculate Conception: A small but beautiful 18th-century chapel.
- Local shops: Pick up handmade souvenirs and locally produced goods while supporting the residents.
- Museum: A small museum dedicated to Masca’s history and traditional way of life.
👉 Tip: Most cafés, restaurants, and souvenir shops in Masca close around 17:00–18:00, especially in the low season. If you arrive later, you may find very little open.
Hiking Masca Gorge: An Unforgettable Adventure
The Masca Gorge hike (Barranco de Masca) is one of the most famous and spectacular hikes in Tenerife. The trail descends from the mountain village down to the Atlantic coast, leading you through dramatic volcanic cliffs, lush vegetation, and narrow canyons.
However, this is not an easy stroll — it requires good physical fitness. The terrain is rocky, uneven, and at times steep and slippery. Expect the descent from the village to the beach to take around 3–3.5 hours.
To make your adventure both comfortable and safe, preparation is essential.
- Wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support — the single most important piece of kit.
- Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person and energy snacks.
- Be aware: there are no toilets or water points along the route, facilities are only available once you reach Los Gigantes.
- Protect yourself from the Canarian sun with a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
New Rules for Hiking Masca Gorge (Updated 2025)
In the past, the trail was open to everyone, free of charge, and could be walked both ways. Today, strict regulations are in place to ensure safety and preserve the gorge’s fragile ecosystem. The system now works as follows:
- Advance booking is required: You must reserve a permit in advance via the official website Camino del Barranco de Masca. Places are limited, so book well before your trip.
- Mandatory shuttle bus: Private cars are not permitted to access the trailhead. A shuttle bus from Santiago del Teide takes you to the starting point in Masca. The shuttle fee is included in your hiking permit.
- One-way hike only (downhill): The trail is currently open only for descents from Masca village to Masca beach.
- Mandatory boat transfer back: The path back up from Masca beach to the village is closed. You must leave by boat, which takes you to Los Gigantes harbour. Boat tickets must be booked separately in advance — ideally no later than four hours after your scheduled hiking start time. Tickets can be booked directly with the licensed operator scheduled for your date: the “Transport companies” section of the official Masca Gorge website shows who is operating that day and provides booking links.
👉 Costs: A boat ticket from Masca beach to Los Gigantes costs about €25. Organised tours (including permit, transfers, and boat) range from €140 to €165 per person, depending on the package.
How to Get to Masca Village
- By car: From the southern resorts (e.g. Costa Adeje), take the TF-1 motorway to Santiago del Teide, then follow the winding TF-436 road to Masca. There is free parking in the village, but spaces are very limited. If you are hiking the gorge: you must park at the Santiago del Teide cemetery car park (large, free area), then walk about 10 minutes to the official shuttle stop. Need a hire car? - By public bus (TITSA): Buses run to Santiago del Teide (e.g. routes 473, 477 from Costa Adeje). From there, take the official shuttle to Masca (available only to hikers with permits). If visiting just the village (not hiking): regular Titsa buses (such as route 355) connect Santiago del Teide directly with Masca village. - As part of an organised tour: Many companies offer full-day trips including hotel transfers, hiking permits, and a boat ride back from Masca beach to Los Gigantes.
