Loro Parque Tenerife: A Wildlife Wonderland

Picture this: you’re face-to-face with sharks in a glass tunnel, while tropical fish of every colour glide above your head. A moment later, you’re laughing at the antics of sea lions, then holding your breath as orcas leap with astonishing grace and power. Step into an Antarctic world where hundreds of penguins waddle and snow falls before your eyes, then wander through lush jungle aviaries where exotic birds fly freely above you. Intrigued?

Welcome to Loro Parque Tenerife — one of the island’s most famous attractions, where nature and wonder intertwine to create unforgettable memories. This world-renowned zoo and botanical garden is a tropical paradise, home to rare animals, lush planting, and some of Europe’s most spectacular animal shows.

Dive into Wildlife: What to See and Do in Loro Parque

Located in Puerto de la Cruz, on Tenerife’s lush northern coast, Loro Parque is home to more than 400 species of animals and plants. Consistently praised by visitors, it has been ranked among the world’s best zoos on TripAdvisor, making it a must-visit for families, couples, and animal lovers alike.

Among its most signature highlights are the celebrated Loro Parque shows:

Orca Ocean: Prepare to be amazed in one of the park’s most impressive arenas. Here, orcas display their intelligence and power through breathtaking leaps, synchronised movements, and playful splashes that drench the front rows. More than entertainment, this performance showcases the special bond between these magnificent animals and their dedicated trainers.

Dolphinarium: Enter a world of elegance and agility. A pod of bottlenose dolphins performs dazzling acrobatics — high jumps, synchronised spins, sliding across the water on their tails, and even launching trainers skyward. It’s an energetic, joyful show that highlights the dolphins’ remarkable intelligence and charm.

Sea Lion Show: Get ready to laugh out loud! The park’s charismatic sea lions are natural comedians — playing ball, dancing, mimicking human gestures, and cheekily “stealing” from their trainers. Their playful personalities make this one of the most popular shows for visitors of all ages.

Parrot Show: Parrots are the park’s original stars (“loro” means “parrot” in Spanish). In this interactive show, you’ll meet clever birds that not only talk in several languages but also ride bikes, solve simple puzzles, and even paint. They swoop so close over the audience that you can feel the rush of their wings, creating a magical, immersive experience.

Beyond its spectacular shows, Loro Parque Tenerife features a wealth of themed zones where visitors can encounter animals and plants from all over the world:

Planet Penguin: Step into one of the world’s largest penguin habitats, designed to replicate the icy landscapes of Antarctica. Every day, over 12 tonnes of real snow and ice are produced to maintain this frosty wonderland. A moving walkway takes you past different species, including species such as king, gentoo, and rockhopper penguins, as they dive, swim, and waddle across the snow.

Aquarium: Home to more than 15,000 marine and freshwater creatures, the aquarium is a highlight for many. Its 18.5-metre underwater tunnel offers a thrilling close-up encounter with sharks, while the mesmerising AquaViva section dazzles with hundreds of glowing jellyfish in a breathtaking light display.

Lion’s Kingdom: A carefully recreated African savannah where you can watch majestic lions roam and interact in conditions designed to mirror their natural environment.

Gorilla Habitat: A troop of western lowland gorillas lives here in a large, naturalistic enclosure. Visitors can observe their fascinating social interactions — from grooming and nest-building to caring for their young — offering an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of these intelligent primates.

Other animals: The park is also home to flamingos, sloths, tigers (including rare white tigers), alligators, pygmy hippos, capybaras, red pandas, jaguars, and an impressive variety of exotic birds such as black swans and golden pheasants.

Botanical Gardens: With over 7,000 palm trees, rare cacti, and themed areas like the Ara Jungle, a stunning orchidarium featuring more than 200 orchid species, and a tranquil Zen garden, Loro Parque is as much a botanical paradise as it is a zoo.

Thai Village: At the park’s entrance, visitors are greeted by an elaborate Thai-style village — six traditional wooden buildings decorated with authentic gold-leaf details.

Kinderlandia: A children’s play zone designed as an African village, with slides, rope bridges, and treehouses where little ones can climb, play, and burn off energy in a safe environment.
